The study of the Free Worlds League is a study of paradox: Although divided internally, the League presents a united front to the other four Successor States. The League is essentially mercantile-oriented, but is eminent in many fields of scientific and technological investigation. In addition, in what is possibly the most democratic state in the Inner Sphere, there have been more civil uprisings than in any other Successor State.

The Free Worlds League is the oldest Successor State, being established by the treaty of Marik in 2271, which united the Marik Commonwealth, the Grand Duchy of Oriente, and the Principality of Regulus. It consists of 333 planets, each with its own government, culture, economy, and political system. This was a loose organization of states, and they began to expand into the surrounding systems. In 2293, Juliano Marik annexed the Stewart Commonality, and was designated Captain-General. Since then, House Marik has held the post of Captain-General until the present day. Beginning in 2398, the Capellan Confederation declared war on the League in an attempt to annex Andurien and it's surrounding systems. This began the 150-year period known as the Age of War. During the Age of War, the Terran Hegemony developed the first battlemechs. In 2556, Ian Cameron, leader of the Terran Hegemony, negotiated the Andurien Peace Treaty, ending the Age of War, and setting the foundations for the creation of the Star League.

The League is oriented toward trade, excels in science, and nurtures democratics ideals, but its laissez-faire philosophy makes many of it's citizens nervous in a universe facing war or the threat of war, and this has lead to many internal upheavals. Janos Marik faces mounting difficulties as he tries to hold things together from his capital on Atreus.

The recent Steiner-Davion alliance, the most significant realignment of power within the Inner Sphere since the Succession Wars began, has forced House Marik to ally with House Kurita's Draconis Combine (a militaristic police state) and Marik's traditional enemy, House Liao's Capellan Confederation. How long such strange bedfellows might remain allied is unknown, but forming a united front against the military power of House Davion and the economic power of House Steiner is a strong incentive to do so.

The Ranks for Free Worlds League Military Personnel are as follows:

Please note that ALL new recruits will begin at the rank of Recruit, from where they will be promoted based on performance. New recruits will attend the Academy where they will be trained in personal, vehicle, and Battlemech combat. There will be several stages in Academy training, and an advance in rank and/or class will follow each successfully completed stage. Also note that this rank chart is only meant for military personnel. Ambassadors and other civilian personnel will be given 'ranks' appropriate to their job, and will also be classed accordingly. An ambassador to a major House will be ranked about 27, and the rest will follow down from there.
